In this module, students learn the basics of discrete-event simulation (DES) and its practical application in questions of material flow technology. The procedure model for simulation studies according to VDI 3633.1 is discussed. The specific fundamentals of statistics deal in particular with the methods used to analyze and generate input data and the methods used to classify and evaluate the output data generated. Other topics include experiment planning and evaluation as well as process models and techniques for verification and validation. The organizational embedding of simulation studies in planning projects is dealt with explicitly.
Selected topics and methods from the lecture, in particular those relating to model creation, the implementation of simulation studies and verification and validation, are explored in greater depth in the exercises and discussed using practical examples. The simulation models are developed independently by the students. The simulation studies are carried out using a simulation tool.
