This module teaches students the fundamentals of discrete-event simulation (DES) and its practical application to material flow engineering problems. Throughout the module, the phases of the procedural model for simulation studies according to VDI 3633.1 are discussed. In the section on statistical fundamentals, the most important methods for analyzing and generating input data are presented. The focus here is on methods necessary for creating realistic input data, as well as on procedures for evaluating and interpreting the simulated output data. Students learn to select statistical models and apply them to specific problems. Other phases discussed in the simulation study include experimental design and evaluation, as well as verification and validation techniques in the context of DES. In particular, the module teaches how resource consumption can be minimized and energy efficiency maximized through the use of DES (sustainability).
In the lab, students learn to model simulation processes using a practical tool. The lab consists of a series of progressive exercises that focus on various structural and component elements, such as process flow, parameterization, storage, and conveyor belts.
