This module provides students with an overview of the design and operation of various IT systems in production and logistics. The course explains various IT concepts, particularly regarding software development methodologies and database design. Furthermore, key requirements for an IT system are described from various perspectives, and technical concepts for meeting these requirements are presented. To this end, the course covers the functional and technical fundamentals of IT system design, with a focus on the practical presentation of the tasks, structures, and functionalities of these systems. Students will become familiar with various techniques to effectively support the different phases of system design. Key topics include data modeling using entity-relationship models (ERM) and their conversion into relational database models.
In the lab, students learn to work with the IT concepts introduced earlier. The focus here is on a practical perspective of IT landscapes, including the associated fundamentals of database query languages such as SQL, as well as programming elements. In particular, the design of databases and the independent design of relational databases are key aspects of the course. The assignments are based on real-world examples from manufacturing and logistics, allowing students to apply the skills they have learned to practical scenarios.
